Where to find older port vintages?

Hello all,

My wife and I have been recently bitten by the vintage port bug, and would like to buy some older vintages of several houses.

Any recommendations for good sources?

Thanks for your help,

Ther surely most be a decent wine shop or two in St. Louis. However the Brown Derby in Springfield MO has a huge stock of fine wines and ships all over the US where allowed. Their web site is at

. They also mail frequent catalogs. Their phone no. is (417) 883-4066. Their mailing address is 202 South Glenstone, Springfield Missouri

65804. In a recent catalog, they had 1970 Fonseca. They also had the recent, but rare and expensive, Quinta do Noval Nacional 1997 at US$899.99 per bottle!. I suspect they can locate many vintages of ports for you. If you want something very old, you may have to use an auction house or contact one of the high end wne shops in a major city on the East or West coast.

My mailbox is always full to avoid spam. To contact me, erase snipped-for-privacy@webtv.net from my email address. Then add snipped-for-privacy@yahoo.com . I do not check this box every day, so post if you need a quick response.

I think your best bet is via auction, but I suppose it depends on what you mean by older vintages. For some reason I use 1966 as a benchmark - Anything older is "really old" while anything between 1966 and 1983 is "quite old" and from 1983 to now is fairly recent.

I have no idea why I use those benchmarks - but it seems to make sense to me! 1985 onwards will be widely available in ordinary retail outlets (at least here in the UK) but the older ones will be a bit harder to track down.

Sorry I couldn't be more help

I know nothing in St Louis (though I've heard of Brown Derby).

But if you're willing to order: Premier Cru in Emeryville CA tends to have a decent selection of port, reasonably priced (premiercru.net). K & L , also in Bay area, has some too. D& M is somewhat of a port specialist I understand, but a little pricier.

Zachy's usually has some older ports, but prices are usually up there.

Check winecommune and other acution sites.

Good luck! Dale

try winecommune.com. They are an auction site and currently have 178 port auction entries.

If you like the vintage port have you tried the vintage Madeira's?? I've had regular Madeira bought from a wine supermarket and thought it was only ok. But recently I had the privilege of tasting several vintage Madeira's and they were amazing. I found the 1951 the best out of the lot.

They were from a private wine cellar and I have no idea from where they were gotten.
