modifying siphon tip?

Has anyone succesfully modified that inverted plastic tip that is on the end of so many siphoning canes/auto-siphons?

I find that it is way deeper than necessary, and leaves behind about an inch of wine, where about a half-inch seems as though it would be plenty deep enough to rack and not take over any sediment.

I was thinking of detaching it from the end, and sanding down the open end about third or a half an inch. Any comments?

If you lift the edge of your carboy as you rack (I gently rock it to one side and fold up a towel and put it under the raised edge), and put the end of the cane into the deeper side that it creates, you'll get much more to siphon out.

Scott,

Thanks for the description. The thing I'm most curious about is how you designed it to be strong enough to hold up 3 - 7.5 gal carboys, 3 tiers high. That's a lot of weight.

Well I also make/have made water tight containers. I can sure that this design is well/over engineered. a 2x12 is a significant piece of wood. Below each shelf is an effect 2x4 carpenter glued and deck screwed into place. I have built wooden based aquariums (with glass front) up to 2,500 gallons and I know what the wood and support materials can bare. I have a real tendency to over engineer, so most of the gross carpentry I do look s ugly, but it'll hold a car if I need it to.

Specifically you can but 1/2 deep grooves into the frames for the shelves to fit into (which is what I planned), or take 2x4 and glue and screw them to the correct placement. The front of the shelves are molded to keep carboys and tools from sliding off.

Thanks Scott - I'll keep your over engineered approach in mind as I'm putting together some shelves for my cellar.

Lets not forget that we also take the slush, such as it is and combine it into something small, do we dare say beer bottle and let this settle out. Which at later times can find its way back into the main bulk, that is if it has not been tasted away... :-o

I find used peanut butter bottles to be very effective - easy to pour into, and easy to pour out of (right into my mouth).
