my first ZIN wine...(whats that smell)

Hi ...last fall I put on a batch of wine using zin grapes from a local produce company here in Fredericton N.B., Canada(east coast)......they were from California of course.....the lugs had the Oceans Of Wine-Bacchus School of Wine label....out of New Jersey.....the grapes looked great ....no mold at all....some raisaining but not bad....high brix(27)......added 1camden tabs/gal.......waited 24hrs....pitched yeast......right away this must seemed different than my own grapes that I grow.......had a "grassy" odor.....unable to really identify due to my inexperience......but I continued on......made a second wine from the skins.....then just for fun....a third.........this past weekend I did some more racking.....all 3 batches have a funny odor and a similar taste.....the first(main) batch being the most pronounced in odor and taste.......perhaps its a "sulphite" odor I detect???....could these grapes have been sprayed with sulphites at the point of origin.....or could the particle board material that the lugs were made of have leeched an odor??.....any thoughts people??......thanks Andy Jones
