Poor mans Champaign

I read a long time ago that something resembleing champaign could be made using apple cider. It seems like the suggestion was to put a sugar cube and a couple raisins in each bottle.

There must be a lot more to it. Has anyone heard of such a thing? Thanks.

If you make a dry cider from pressed apples you can add a 1/2 tsp/pint sugar to a champagne bottle filled with the dry cider and ferment in the bottle to create a sparkling cider. You then rittle the bottle to get a plug of sediment in the neck and disgorge this plug. Recap after disgorging and you have champagne style sparling apple cider. And by no means is this a poor man's champagne .
