There are simple one-use testers called Titrets that work reasonably accurately for white wines. The makeup of red wines causes them to read high, but by what amount, I'm not sure. It probably depends on the wine.

I've used titrets but am at a loss as to how to best use them with red wine. I've heard you keep 'titrating' until the wine in the tube returns to the original color, and I've also heard about using the color of the foam in the tube as an indicator.

Has anyone done tests with other methods to determine what methods work best with titrets?

Hi,

I've compared titrets with aeration/oxidation, and find that the best way to use titrets with reds is to get the solution to return to the color of the wine, take the reading, then subtract 20 ppm, and use that figure as your value.

You may occassionally be too high, but rarely more than 10 ppm, and better 10 ppm too high than 10 ppm too low.
