Shipping to Rhode Island????

Hello All, I am looking for information on state laws that affect wine shipments to the state of Rhode Island. Yes, I know there is a website dedicted to those state laws that affect shipping of wine. But I have forgotten to save that website. Could someone kindly point me in the right direction? I'm hoping that Rhode Island isn't one of those anal-retentive felony states..... Joanne

Is this a commercial shipment or a private gift?

Commercial enterprises are subject to inspection by all sorts of taxing authorities. If you are sending a gift to a friend or relative, just pack it well, double poly bag in for leakage and put it in the mail or UPS. The mailman does not ask what you are shipping and there is no reason to tell him. Ed

This is home-made wine being sent as a gift. Joanne

This is not just a question about the law in the state of rhode island. If you are shipping from another state you are falling under Federal Law (ATF-Treasury Dept.)as well as the state your shipping it from. Both the state(s) as well as the feds want their tax money....

So as far as I am aware it is Illegal for the home wine maker to ship wine via interstate or intrastate.. plus if the shipper (ups, the post office etc.) Finds out what you are shipping they are not permitted ship or deliver it.

Now that been said... If you are shipping just one or two bottles I'm sure people do it quite often and they may even get away with it.......

I hope this helps...

Sean, I think you are being incredibly over-reactive. I have shipped my wine to California and other homies in CA have shipeed to me NO PROBLEMS!!!! New Mexico and California are [SENSIBLE] reciprocity states. Unlike our federal government when it comes to naming Blaufranc 'Lemberger'........ Joanne

Technically, it is probably against the law. So is going 59 mph in a 55 zone.

Just send it and make the recipient happy. To the mailman or UPS guy, it is just another of the hundreds of boxes he handles every day. Ed

I take it that most people ship their wines to contests via the mail or UPS so it must be a common thing.

As a side question, when you ship to a contest is shipping bottle shock not a problem?

Don, in my experience, it can be. Especially if it is shipped twice-over. If I were to enter a wine in a contest where I had to ship my wine to, I would ship it as early as possible. Also, you should inquire about storage facilities of the wines entered....... Joanne
