Alesmith Speedway Stout and...

Rogue Double Bastard. Hmm...the DB didn't seem to have that intense flavour that I remembered it having last year. Could be that this is the same vintage and it doesn't age well or...it's formula changes every year?

The Speedway....yum, yum, yummy. The 12% abv is there, but the complexity in conjunction with the smoothness of the stout has to be tasted to be believed.

Any of you East Coast boys tried this one before? Your thoughts?

Oops...meant Stone Double Bastard.

Actually, I found this year's edition very nice indeed, without the sharp tang at the end but with a richer, more "eounded" body.

That sounds more like how I'd describe "Stone's Double Bastard Ale.

I'm not East Coast, but you're getting there... and my thoughts are happy ones as I shift into full holiday mode!

I like that term "full holiday mode". May have to borrow it from time to time. ;^)

It ages darn well. This years DB is maybe a touch under what I remember of last year's, but it's still pretty amazing stuff. As for it being the same vintage, the year is printed on the bottle.

Way too much coffee in the Speedway for my tastes. I like some coffee bitterness, but I find it pretty overwhelming in the Speedway. Decent stuff, but don't have a real need to try it again.

Well, I'm not East Coast, but I'm a looong way north of the source. I did go to a conference in San Diego this past spring and visited Alesmith.

I really liked Speedway and I've still got a bottle waiting for the right occasion. I agree that it's smooth and very complex, but you have got to love coffee to like this one. I'm sometimes hit and miss with coffee stouts, but Speedway worked for me - I think it's big enough to support the rich coffee flavour & bitterness.

It's not something I'd drink every day, but I thought it was a pretty amazing beer.

Wow. How did I miss that? It's not even small print. Thanks, Dan.

Thanks for your input, Bill. The funny thing is, I doubt that I drink 20 cups of coffee a year. I'm really not a coffee drinker but the Speedway is one heck of a coffee presentation in a beer.

Gotta agree with you...it's not something I could drink everyday but for special occasions...
