Blue Moon

My local bar carries this beer called Blue Moon labeled as a Belgian White. The name of the bar just happens to be The Blue Moon. Most of the fare is standard American brew. They have Michelob Amber Bock on tap but it seems to run out a lot and the bar back is not inclined to change the keg for me in spite of my generous tips. Anyway, I like this Blue Moon. The bartender says it's made by Coors and is unfiltered. I was just wondering what yinze think about this beer. And what is a "white" beer. I've had Belgian Wheat at the local micro-brew and it seems to be somewhat similar. Please fill me in so I know exactly what I'm drinking. Thanks.

A white beer, or witbier, is a light colored wheat beer, usually of Belgian origin.

...and Blue Moon is, in fact, brewed by Coors.

Question for you notbob: Does spanish peaks white classify as a "real" white?

I like the stuff, BTW, and haven't been able to find it in the SFBA for some time now.

It's a witbier as Coors would do it, which means it's not particularly authentic but isn't actively bad. I'm a huge fan of the style and, while I don't really like Blue Moon much, it can serve as a bit of a starter beer to get into the style.

FYI, Hooegarden is generally the most readily-available Belgian wit around, good one to look for. If you're in the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast area, Allagash brewing out of Maine makes a killer wit, their Allagash White, one of the best of the style in the world.

Acording to the N. American Brewers Association, it is, having won a silver medal in 2000:

I notice their website seems to have disappeared (or server down):

Celis also makes a very nice witbier.

Hot damn, Celis is back. Now I just hope they ship it to Georgia like they did the old Celis. Is it as good as the old one that was brewed in Texas?

I bought some from an on line source...never had the "old" one from Texas but I thought the resurrected version was *quite* nice.

Btw, that source for the Celis is Liquid Solutions.

Had never tried the old (nor the new), but what I've heard is, while still pretty darn good, it didn't quite equal the old stuff.

Gotta get me some, though. Do love wits.

The complete story is a bit complex, but that's the gist of it-- Celis sold out their shares to Miller, who apparently couldn't properly market and distribute flavorful beer. It died in 2001. However, the Michigan Brewing Company bought not only the brand from Miller, but the hardware from the brewery in Austin. AFAIK, right now they brew the White and the Pale Bock, and distribute near the brewery, in Austin (and maybe a place of two in the PNW like Portland?). FWIW, I was in Austin last month and was dumbfounded to see the old familiar Celis label on beer on the shelves (I didn't know they distributed there). The White tastes pretty much like it did when brewed in Austin, though maybe a touch less smooth or more grainy. Still well worth drinking.

The Blue Moon is on Butler Street in Lawrenceville, a neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Just thought "yinze" should know.

There are several Blue Moon bars in cities across the U.S. Your point?

Oh, Guess

"Yinze" or "youns" is a local Pittsburgh slang... means the same as "y'all". That was the location tip-off moreso than "Blue Moon".

"Yinze shall not kill, n'at" - sign waved at a war protest in Pittsburgh.
