OXFORD - Forget about roses and chocolate. At Miami University, some students treated their Valentine's Day sweethearts to a mug of pink beer.

Four Miami juniors have started what they hope becomes a new tradition in the college town - Pink Beer Day.

The idea was inspired by Miami's popular Green Beer Day, which is held every year on the Thursday before the school's spring break in honor of St. Patrick's Day.

The motto of Pink Beer Day: fun, friends ... and beer, of course.

Brad Heitkamp, one of the co-founders, said they came up with Pink Beer Day because typical Valentine's Day activities are for couples and rarely take up the whole day. "You maybe go to dinner," he said. "Then you just want to hang out with your friends."

While fun may have been the objective, once the pink beer festivities started at noon Wednesday at Skipper's Pub, the co-founders also discovered a way to make money - by selling T-shirts.

Co-founder Mike Leonard said they thought it might be fun to make up a few dozen shirts for themselves and their friends, but he was surprised by the demand.

"We had 40 shirt orders in the first hour," Leonard said.

More than 1,100 people have joined the online group. Co-founder Tommy Harnden predicts they'll sell more than 475 shirts.

Two Oxford bars hosted Pink Beer Day festivities - Skipper's and The Balcony.

Matt Secrest, general manger at The Balcony, said he doubts the event will be as big as Green Beer Day, but if all runs smoothly, the idea might stick around.
