First beer out of nothing !

Hey guys !

Not having the equipment to brew my own stuff, nor having the money to buy it *yet*, and beign somewhat not so patient, I decided to nonetheless brew some stuff for pure pleasure.

First off, i sanitized my equipment of fortune with bleach and boiled it, just to be sure, then rinced it. Then, I boiled about 750ml of water and added about the 3/4th of a maple syrup can (sorry i have no idea what quantity it is). I also added some concentrated grape fruit to it for the nutriments (just an assetion, I heard there were plenty of nutriments in there and I wasnt sure there were enough in just maple). Boiled it for half an hour, removed the scum that formed and let it cool down. I then sacrificed some of my Unibroue - Trois Pistoles lees, which I dont like to drink anyway. I racked all that stuff in an ice cream plastic container, pierced a hole and placed some foil on the hole so that bacteria woulnd't get it.

This "brew" has been sitting on my shelf at room temperature (about 18C) for a month and a half, and i just racked it to old bottles which i sanitized. I'll see how it ages out. Meanwhile, I tasted it and while I do not have an hydrometer to tell you what the gravity is, I can assure you there is alcohol in there.I would dare 8% or so, and it has a lil taste like wine, while not beign too dry. Also, the whole stuff is quite clear, and I made sure the gook wasnt racked to the bottles.

All in all, quite a pleasant drink, and I did not turn blind nor impotent. So far so good ! As to what brewing can be made simple and with very little tools :D

you might want do add enough everclear to fortify it up to about 12% from the 8% you have now.this should kill off anything in there that might make someone sick.the grapefrut might give it hight enough ascorbic acid to keep it ok but what the hell did you do with the Unibroue - Trois Pistoles lees? a was this your yeast pitch? very inventive. why you would boil this mess i dont know. it seems to be more of a wine. must taste very bizarre. reminds me of something i made with canesugar cracked corn and tangerine peals.

Sorry if i sound stupid but do you mind if I ask what is everclear ?

Yep. Trois-Pistoles has a sugary taste, so i thought the yeast might still be alive even though it has an alcohol content of 9%. Guess i was right.

To kill any bacteria.

Yeah it does have a taste that reminds of wine. Not displeasant, though.
