Seasons to be cheerful

My copy of Camra's Beer has arrived on a wet and cold morning - the main cover line is 'Aaahhh.. Summer's here. Time for a beer?' Yes, it's the Summer 2009 edition.

Now as a magazine journalist myself I'm well aware of the habit of dating issues well in advance, but this is silly. In July, we'll have a picture of autumn leaves and hints of winter warmers.

It's like the clothes shops; they're now about a season out of kilter, and don't get me started on Easter eggs at xmas and Xmas shopping starting in August!

The other point is that like clothes the line 'it's time for a beer' is, er, all the time.

Regrettably the article at the back of the magazine is by James May who IMHO does not know anything about beer, for instance in one his recent TV shows went all the way from Kent to Yorkshire , because the best beer comes from Yorkshire( some of it), he neglected to mention any beers from Kent, then in another episode he visited the Newcastle brown brewery ' because its one of the best beers NOT.

Yes, Beer seems to be more of a glossy celebrity love-in rather than a serious beer mag with the politics we usually expect from Camra. Nothing wrong with that if it helps spread the word of course.

Also, why test milds in summer issue - I would have thought golden ales would have been more appropriate.

I am not sure if BEER is sold anywhere or not. If a mag is sold then it is useful to put a date of, say, June 2009 on the front, even if it comes out in early May. People buy it from WHSmiths in May thinking it is just out and brand new and throughout June thinking it is current. If the mag is subscripton only then such tricks are unnecessary.

A magazine with an exact publication date was Aleister Crowley's Equinox; 'twas always issued on Equinoxes!
