Smokehead

Has any of you tasted the Smokehead Islay Single Malt from Ian Macleod yet? I tried it a few days ago on a short vacation. We didn't have proper glassware, but it's a really peaty smoky something. Obviously young, but I detected no offnotes. Reasonably priced too. I liked it a lot, and will get myself a bottle ASAP.

I have seen there is some speculation about its origin. Personally I would guess Lagavulin, but it could also be a young Ardbeg. (As I said in an older thread, I haven't tried the young Ardbegs distilled from 1997 on, so I can't compare with these). Any opinions on this?

Only that I'd be surprised if Ardbeg was selling casks to independent bottlers, since they're getting plenty of attention for their own youngest, etc. bottlings.

I'd definitely buy one of those if I came across it, but most indy bottlings don't make it to western Canada.

Yes, so would I. Could be something that don't fit in with their own profile though.

I have bought one now, and tasted it more properly. I'd say it's a decent young smoky Islay, but not top of the pops, it won't leave a lasting impression in my memory. Buy it if you find it and the price is right : )

So, you have an experienced palate. Your best guess? Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Caol Ila?

No need to be certain. I'm just curious.

I wouldn't really say that, and I I'm not equipped with the best of noses, but:

Based upon nose and especially palate, my guess is Lagavulin. (But I'm not at all certain).

I wouldn't say I have 'an experienced palate', by any means, but I know what I like. Aberlour A'bounadh, Bowmore 17, Ardbeg 10, Lagavulin, Laphroaig, even Clan MacGregor. They seem to have come up more or less in order. I like them all for different reasons. I have an 18 or 20 year old The Glenlivet, which I'm waiting for a visit from an honored friend to open. Bought it around 4 years ago.
