Balt/DC area Beer Store?

Dec 22, 2004 4 Replies

I live in Indiana and would like to buy my nephew a gift certificate at a Good beer store in the Baltimore, D.C. area. Does any one know of one that offers them and also has a good beer selection? Thanks in advance for our help.

I found the following that look promising in the Baltimore area:

  • The Old Vine
  • Wells Discount Liquors

This place, while mainly a wine store, has a huge selection of beers - from all over the world. They're in a large warehouse, and they dedicated two whole aisles to beers. They're about halfway between DC and Balt, right off the B/W Parkway on MD 198.

I heartily second the motion for Wells. They offer arguably/possibly the LARGEST selection of retail beers on the Eastern Seaboard. The last time I pulled a list from them, it had 1,156 SKUs (Stock Keeping Units)--though, of course, this includes variations of megabrews in cans, bottles, bigger bottles, etc., and Belgians in small and large bottles, and beers of several vintages (JW Lees 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003 in four casks), etc.

410-435-2700; ask for Joe in the beer department for any specific beer queries. Gift certificates don't appear on their website, but I'm sure they exist. Or else, you could have them recommend a killer beer to hold aside for your nephew's pickup.

The nearby Old Vine is good as well, as is Chevy Chase Liquors in just-north-of-DC and The Wine Source in the Hampden neighborhood of Baltimore, but Wells is indisputably THE champ. The next nearest competition at that level is State Line Liquors in Elkton, Md., adjacent to the Delaware state line southwest of Newark, Del.

Not to limit you to only one place or option, but you could also consider a gift certificate to pubs like the Brickskeller
