Colourless lager

Dear all,

While reading Bamforth's 'Beer, tap into ...' 2nd ed I ran across something really peculiar on p59. Here he mentions that there was a very shortlived experiment with a colourless lager; no further details.

Anyone know who brewed this and are there any pictures avaiable?

Cheers, Tjander

Several of those horrible malt alternatives were/are colorless, Zima comes to mind.

Miller Brewing Co. had a very short-lived clear beer in the mid 1990s, during that (thankfully) short-lived fad where everything was offered clear (Crystal Pepsi was another one).

Don't know about pictures, but it was definitely clear. Definitely don't know what it tasted like, but it was supposed to taste like beer, as much as Miller's stuff tastes like beer to begin with. It wasn't supposed to be a different sort of beverage, like Zima.

That "clear beer" stuff was crap. It was just a gimmick, kinda like making Pepsi blue or Dr. Pepper red. It had nothing to do with making something that tasted great.

I had it. You are right it was beer, insomuch as Miller High Life is beer. The head lasted about 5 seconds, (not surprising) It really looked like 7-up in your glass. It was being test marketed in Minnesota and I arranged a long(er) layover at MSP so I could find a bar serving it -- at the Mall of America which somehow seemed apt.
