You didn't stumble on it. You spammed it, and you're an idiot. It's useless to anyone outside of the UK. Or are you spamming the UK-related beer newsgroups too? Won't other to check, as your posts will be deleted before reading.

In case there were too many big words up there, I'll repeat: you're an idiot.

Next time, try not to make it sound like an infomercial and people here won't slam you.

Just a question: how is saying "I just stumbled on X site" followed by a brief description of a customer's experience an infomercial? How is this any different than touting a particular brewer's product, even if that product is only available in Europe or in the US? I think the flame was undeserved. Get over it.

It's one thing if you're a regular to a newsgroup and you post: I just found this great site. You guys should visit it." It's another thing if you show up for the first time and say, "I found this incredible site. The service is incredible and the prices are unbeatable. I placed my first order and the people there were fantastic with their service. They showed incredible knowledge in their product and knew exactly what I wanted. Their willingness to make sure I was happy was unsurpassed. Two days later, my order was waiting at my door. I was impressed how quickly it arrived and was even more impressed with how carefully and professionally it was packaged. This is a very professional operation and if you don't buy from them, I will visit you in your sleep and butcher your entire family."

Incidentally, this is the first time you've posted in this newsgroup, haven't you?

The "I just stumbled on X site" thing is a common dodge used by spammers all over Usenet. So, your post looked one hell of a lot like one of those spammers' posts. Get over it (and yourself).

Also, posting on a global newsgroup about a site that really is of use only to people in the UK is rather pointless. There are UK-related newsgroups for this kind of thing.

It was? How is posting info to a *global* newsgroup about a commercial enterprise in the UK, whose services are available only to those in the UK, "on topic?" Advertising on Usenet is never "on topic," whether it's your first post, or your hundredth. You could at least have put an [ADV] in your subject header. First-time posters should have read up on posting to newsgroups *before* actually posting.

Now, do you have anything to actually post about *beer*?

That long ago, eh? Gee, thanks for checking, how long have you been part of the group? Not important is it? Or do I have to be a card carrying, regular poster to have something valid to say?

I think your comment was well taken and well put, I really have no argument with you. You pointed out to the poster that his post looked like potential spam. dgs on the other hand didn't do that, and it is hypocrisy that I point out.

How is telling someone about a site they've come across and used successfully any more advertising than telling someone to look at

formatting link
and scroll down to Brewery Tours any less advertising? Both relate to items specifically UK (I can't take a brewery tour of Youngs here, I'm not in the UK), both if used would make money for a particular company. Thus, you're as much of an advertiser as jaeden is when it comes down to it. Granted, jaeden probably could have phrased his material better, but that comes with being on the group for awhile. In the meantime, you've insulted and probably chased away a newbie. You must feel proud, attacking newbies.

[...snip...]

Like the hypocrisy of this entire metadiscussion?

ObBeer: Tried a Portsmouth Lager from Smuttynose Brewing in Portsmouth, New Hampshire USA. It was very nice-- good firm, medium-bodied malt, with some Noble hop flavor and especially bitterness.

Amen to that, brother.

Or the fooking boredom!

Always did like that beer, never understood why lagers have never really caught on in New England. Now me, I have been digging the hell out of the new Yards Philadelphia Pale Ale. This beer is good enough to make this brewery explode: imagine a sharper-hopped, lighter-framed Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. They lightened up the Brit base malt body with about 30% (I think) pilsner malt, and this thing is a rocket. I really like it, and have been drinking it every place I find it. Good stuff. Headed to the Ship Inn in Milford, NJ tonight for some best bitter. Nice stuff also.

I've been around a couple of years.

Actually, it was obviously spam. Read it again. Does it sound like someone casually writing about a site they've found?

I invite you to do the same. Read it again. If you were recommending a web site how would you describe it? WOuldn't you say: 1) hete it is 2) selection is diverse (or not) 3) ordered a case, 2 day delivery. Tells me all I need to know. That's what a recommendation does. So does an ad, granted, but no, I have to say that it didn't sound to me like spam then or now. It sounded like an enthusiastic recommendation of a beer related site. How would you do it differently?

I've recommended sites in the past and have never gone so out of the way to make it sound like a sales pitch. And who will would include 'the sediment is still settling!!' in a personal recommendation?

It's a sales pitch by someone
