Old bottled beers

Following on from the post about the Whitbread Silver Jubilee Ale, I've often wondered about the collectors market for old bottled beers.

At last years Norwich beer festival the was an auction that included them and they seemed to sell for reasonable amounts.

I am assuming that this type of collecting is quite a minority sport. Or am I wrong there ? Do beers fetch very high prices ?

I have a bottle of Courage Imperial Russian Stout 1992 which I occasionally consider drinking - is there any point hanging onto it,either in terms of value or drinkability ?

Ha!

I have similar dilemma - several old (1988 -1992) bottle conditioned ales (Imperial Stout and Thomas Hardy's ale etc) I have been hoarding.

Sometimes I think I aught to quaff them, but they survive yet.

Are they worth the bother?

I think "minority sport" covers it quite well.

As with any item that can change from occasion to occasion. A high priced item at one event can be a simple dust gatherer at another event.

Should be in fine form at that age - then again it may have had a slight air leak or something and be a disgusting soup.

You have the means to find out.

I had a Thos Hardy 1994 the other night. It tasted more like Madeira than anything else, but more treacly.

It was an interesting experiment but I won't be repeating it :)
