Oranjeboom

I saw this in an Akron area store. Is this beer anygood? I am leary of the aluminum can and its $7 tag.

You're right to be so. Standard pale, fizzy, mostly flavorless industrial lager. Not appreciably different than Heineken, Beck's, Carling, Bud, etc.

Why the "leariness" over the aluminum can? It's a much better package for beer than the green glass bottle in which most similar European light lagers are available in the US. Given the "choice" (which might include a gun pointed at my head) I'd go for a can of Oranjeboom over a bottle of Heineken everytime.

I know I'd buy Pilsner Urquell and Budvar Budweiser in the US more often if I could get them in cans. (As it is, I am very happy to have Pikeland Pils from Sly Fox available to me for about $12 a 12 pack).

I don't know the market in Ohio or whether this was the 4-pack of 1/2 liter cans I've been seeing around recently, but Oranjeboom used to be marketed as a sort of "poor man's Heineken" and sold for less than the, at the time, number one imported beer in the US. I see now that it's merely a brand of InBev and has bounced around from brewery to brewery. (Haven't had one since the early 70's, I'd guess).

I might give it a shot next time I see it. I jsut don't want to get a skunky tasting beer.

Trader Joe's usually has it at less than $7.00/6.

i'm surprised this drink is for sale where you are. here in its country of origin it's not something people fancy drinking. save for a certain kind of people ;)

brewed in a town near where i am. btw, $7 for how many cans?

cheers

Well, I hope it's not from anything Steve or I said , since we both kinda agree that it's "just another International light lager", with nothing really going for it.

AH! But that's my point about the can vs. the Euro green bottle! Skunked beer (aka "light struck"), true skunked beer, happens *because* of the green bottle. Not age, not "poor handling" (save when that handling occurs in the sunlight or under florescent light), not some mystery ingredient (well, I suppose some people might smell/taste "skunk" with any hoppy beer). So, given the same beer (no matter how bland) a can is always going to be better than a green bottle.

It's mediocre beer, definitely not worth a dollar per can, even if the can is 16oz.

It's about Heineken-grade. Not tasty or interesting, but a few steps up from Bud.

Pretty much impossible to get skunky beer from a can, since it's exposure to light that causes it.

Although, I swear, Heineken manages to do it anyway.

I used to buy it at Trader Joes for about 4.50 for a four pack of 16oz. Not a great beer, but not bad really. I would rate it above Bud and Coors. Better body than most American Lagers. And yeah, cans are the way to go over green or clear bottles. Unless that have genetically altered the hops to not become lightstruck and cause skunkiness.

It will compare to Stella Artois, Bud, etc., in taste. It would not be my choice for a $7.00 beer.
