Paulaner Brauhaus NOT coming to Atlanta

As the building site sat empty longer and longer past the opening date of Fall, 2004, I was afraid something like this would happen:

From the Atlanta Business Chronicle:

New tenant sought for Paulaner brewery spot Mary Jane Credeur

The restaurateurs who planned to open a Paulaner brewery and restaurant in downtown Atlanta have canceled their plans for the

15,000-square-foot space, and the building's owners have put the restaurant back on the market. Business partners Steve Fuller and Hans Schiller said in 2003 that they planned to open a Paulaner Brauhaus inside the Southern Company Center on the corner of Peachtree and Baker streets. The pair signed a 15-year lease for the space.

The German brewery would have been the first of its kind in the United States, and its menu was going to be heavily influenced by Munich-style dishes such as roast chicken, steak and pork. The establishment was also going to feature live music and room for dancing.

Another German restaurateur, Maximilian Erlmeier, who is director of international business for the Munich-based Hofbrauhaus brewery, had also become involved in the deal in recent months.

But the restaurateurs informed the building owner about 6 weeks ago that the deal for the Paulaner brewery was off, said Mike Shelly, executive vice president with Richard Bowers & Co., which owns the tower at Peachtree and Baker plus the adjacent 260 Peachtree office tower.

"They apparently couldn't pull their financing together in Germany, and [the financing] was a contingent part of the lease, so we just parted ways," Shelly said.

Richard Bowers & Co. has re-listed the restaurant space and has already gotten several inquiries from local and out-of-state restaurateurs interested in the location, Shelly said.

Neither Fuller nor Schiller could be reached for comment, and Erlmeier could not be located.
