Smoked lager

There are several. Any particular one you had in mind?

Tried, but very hard to keep lit.

Most of the time, the malt has been dried with wood, instead of kiln-dried. The smoke ends up leaving behind a, well, smoky flavor.

Bamberg, Germany is especially known for smoked beers. It's not terribly difficult to find Schlenkerla beers at good beer stores (note: some stores, not knowing German, will file this beer under "Aecht," which while on the label simply means "real" and is not the name of the beer). There's a Märzen and a bock typically sold in the States.

Stone brew a smoked porter. Craftsman in Pasadena, CA have a smoked beer, and there's also Alaskan SMoked Porter (a winter sesasonal). All have distinct smoke flavors, but a lot of other stuff going on. But there's definitely smoke, and if that's a flavor you're not wild about, you probably won't like the beer.
