2004 GBG

Received my copy of the 2004 good Beer Guide on Saturday morning. I am curious as to the meaning of the 'tick' symbol that appears alongside the names of a number of the pubs in the book. At first I thought it signified pubs making a first appearance in the Guide, but it does not appear to be the case (checked against local entries in my area).

Can anyone shed any light on this as the symbol is not explained inside the front cover along with the rest.

Cheers,

Phil

It means the pub has the "Cask Marque" award. It is on the inside front cover, but just as a black blob with no tick.

I hear the distant but unmistakable sound of a rickety bridge.

It's for the pubs that paid money to the organisation that sponsor the guide.

This is one of the billy goats gruff speaking:

"You wouldn't like my big brother. Back under the bridge please."

Is the fact that a pub has a beer garden or serves real cider anything to do with CAMRA? But both of those are indicated by symbols.

I'm feeling mischievous ;-)

But your lack of answer speaks volumes.

Oi you. You know by raising the gardens issue you are likely to raise the cackles of all those who think CAMRA should only be involved in real ale. None of this garden stuff here if you please.

Should the descriptions of the pubs be deleted too then, according to these purists?

I thought of mentioning the car park symbol, but then thought, "better not" ;-)

Still surprised it doesn't have a 'garden table on the pavement' sign ;)

yes that's it exactly isn't it? the truth, whole truth & nothing else :~)

OK I'll have a go at an answer as well - It signifies that the pub (or pub co or brewery) gives a toss enough about the quality of their ale that they're willing to pay for a professional body to audit the beer quality on a regular basis.

that camra & CM have different but overlapping aims is clear. gbg has had a sponsor for years - the propriety of the relationship should be clear from the branches as to whether there is any collusion about CM pubs being listed in the guide. I'd guess we have numerous active branch management members here (?)- anyone care to comment?

I am sure also that there are some pubs which may have good enough beer for CM, but may not be good enough *pubs* for GBG (perhaps due to a surfeit of good oubs in an area?) & so don't get listed. cheers MikeMcG mic (underscore) mac (at) postmaster (dot) co (dot) uk

I can certainly say that as far as my branch is concerned, the presence or otherwise of Cask Marque accreditaion plays no part whatsoever in GBG selection.

Not even if it didn't have a camera?

In my branch CM accreditation has no bearing whatsoever. It is a complete non-issue in the selection process.
