I wouldn't use it myself, but how much is bl**dy expensive?

Indeed. It's been some twenty years since I brewed - I had to stop when the sproggen manifested themselves - I couldn't afford the spolit brews arising from the little dears falling into the mash tun and so on. (Nevermind carpet damage and accusations of abuse!) However, now they have more or less been booted out of the nest and with retirement approaching (assuming that my liver keeps up with the programme) I have space to start again.

I still get a bit thirsty - I used to have three 5-gallon production lines running at peak times, plus the development line. A brew including preparation and cleaning down used to take the best part of a day - enjoyable, but it gets in the way of life in general. 'Er Indoors' wants acces to the kitchen for a start and my time is still worth a Shekel or two. Glub only knows why!

I haven't looked at the prices of raw materials for a while so I can't put forward a full business case, but if I were to stop buying beer at the supermarket and go back to home brewing, I reckon that the investment would break even in about two years.

I got quite good at brewing a decent pint - visitors would rather drink my homebrew than bought stuff. I'd like to get back to that happy situation and that would be priceless,

My biggest brewing days were when I lived in Saudi Arabia and it was production line style there given the unavailability of the real thing so I also got quite good, I also got into distilling but that's another story. Supermarket beer is in my mind very cheap and convenient if you like fizzy lemonade with alcohol in it which is all it seems to be but a decent pint of homebrew would indeed be priceless. I think the critical thing is volume and continuity, if you can make and dispense/drink a steady volume you may indeed recoup your outlay in time if you factor in taste compared to supermarket fizz even faster than the raw money data might suggest.

However, this gizmo is quite sofisticated, with a quite high degree of automation. The early versions had a bit of a "Senseo" feel about it, but later versions have improved. It is used by professional brewers for test brews as well.

I have been using one for 18 months, expensive yes, but well worth it. I can produce a commercial quality beer 100% of the time. I could sell it if I wanted. If you want to know more please get in touch Steve
