Shipping wine to the US from Italy

I will be taking a trip to Italy in 3 weeks. While there, we will be touring the major cities. I'd like to ship a couple of cases of wine back to the US.

I did a Google search and found no definitive help. Has anyone had experience shipping wine from Italy to the US? I realize there will be taxes since 24 bottles certainly exceeds the allowed 2 bottles of tax-free alcohol. Is it really expensive? Any problems with shipping - - damage, temperature conditions, etc?

Also, who there would ship the wine? Do the local wine/liquor shops do this for you?

Thank you for any help,

Chris

In the past I've brought a few cases of wine back from France with me. The way I did this was the bring styro/cardboard wine shippers with me as checked baggage. I bought some interesting wines, and then packed them myself, and checked them as return baggage. You can do this pretty easily, and while it can be a bit of an pain lugging around the extra baggage, it's much cheaper than shipping.

Jim,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I"m going as part of a tour, and we can only have one suitcase and one carry-on. That makes bringing any other containers out of the question.

Guess I'll have to suck it up and spend a little $$ to get the wine back here.

Thanks,

Chris
