Cask alert - Pot of Beer, Manchester

The Pot of Beer in Manchester closed its doors for the last time on 10th May and has since been boarded up. It is likely to be demolished for redevelopment.

The good news is that Sue and Paul, the erstwhile managers, have taken on the nearby Beer House and hope to be offering a mega range of cask ales within a few weeks.

The bad news, if you're a brewer, is that a whole bunch of empty casks are lying around in the back yard of the Pot and likely to be nicked for smelting any time now. A casual scan round tonight suggested some 2 dozen nines, almost all from micro breweries. I can remember Skipton and Salamander but not others.

If you're a micro brewer and you're owed some casks, get over there sharpish!

I would like to post a small follow up to this story and a thankyou to Joyce Whitchurch for bringing this to our attention. These casks have now been uplifted and will soon be returned to the correct brewers. Although this may seem like a small thing, casks can easily account for 50% of the startup costs of a small brewery.

puts a lot of effort into retrieving missing/stolen casks. However we rely heavily on you, the public to inform us whenever you spot abandoned or stolen casks.

I would like to thank Joyce on behalf of the brewers who have now had casks returned and urge everyone else to be on the look out. Reporting is simple and can be done through kegwatch, SIBA or even just posting here.

Remember it might not seem like much but this is our livelyhood!

Thanks again
