Pub near Millennium Stadium?

Hi all,

I'll be in Cardiff on Monday supporting the mighty Huddersfield Town in the 3rd Division playoff final. I'll have a bit of time to kill before the game and will hopefully also be in need of somewhere to celebrate afterwards. Decent real ale is the essential component I require, a fairly quiet pub would be preferred.

A quick glance at the GBG 2004 suggests the Glass Works, and I've also heard mention of the Prince of Wales (a McSpoons I believe). Any views on either of these places, or any alternative suggestions?

Cheers,

Martin

I'll second that. When I was in Cardiff for a business trip a couple of years ago I was recommended that pub and it was well worth the visit. I had to walk past the stadium to get to it so its not far away.

If you can bear to try the spoons, then the Gatekeeper is on Westgate St, opposite an entrance to the stadium and usually has a good selection on. Don't even think about "quiet" though!- and I'd imagine anywhere within 5 min walk will be pretty hectic.

Doesn't the choice of Real Ales at the 'Gatekeeper' drop drastically on a (any) 'match' day ? I've heard rumours that *all* handpulls usually have on 'a' Brain Beer, and no other choice ? Is this correct ?

I'm in full agreement about the 'hectic' remark Mike.

Well, in the end I went for the Cayo Arms on Cathedral Road, and very pleased I was too. It's about 10-15 mins walk from the stadium and that seems to take it off the radar of most of the fans. When I got there on Monday at about 11.15am there were just 2 people (also Huddersfield fans) sat out the front, and no-one else inside. Even at its peak (about

1pm) the place wasn't packed and it was still easy to get served at the bar.

Talking of which they had a good range on - a couple of Tomos Watkins (Whoosh and OSB) and a couple of Brains (can't remember which). The staff were very friendly. When I called back after the match they'd also got Tomos Watkins Cwrw Haf on.

So all in all, very good, but don't tell anyone otherwise it'll lose its appeal!
