Cologne: pubs location

Credit cards are dangerous in the wrong hands...I've just booked a flight to Cologne. Plan is 3 nights in Cologne, 2 in Dusseldorf with maybe a trip out on the train somewhere.

I've been to Cologne once before and visited the beer halls/pubs in the Old Town/market square area near the cathedral (Dom).

Question: I hope to be exploring Cologne in further detail. Are there any other areas in Cologne with concentrations of pubs/night life? I seem to recall there were a few bars on the opposite side of the station to the Dom. What about "other side of the river" where the exhibition hall is?

Same for Dusseldorf. There are a lot of pubs in the "old town" near the river. Anywhere else?

Thanks Bruce

Found this on the web:

------ Cologne has five city quarters that are filled with bars and clubs:

  1. Friesenstrasse/Friesenplatz: mixed crowd of students, yuppies, tourists. Lots of bars and some microbreweries
  2. Belgisches Viertel: lots of small bars hidden in an old living area. Student crowd.
  3. Zuelpicher Strasse: a road full of bars, restaurants, and dance clubs. Cheap and something for everybody.
  4. Hohenzollernring: main boulevard, people cruising in their cars, lots of tourists, stylish
  5. Altstadt: the old town at the Rhine riverfront has an older crowd. Businessmen and tourists.
