diluting brandy and mixers

May 24, 2006 22 Replies

I have a bottle of brandy that never gets used. could anyone explain to a novice what 'mixers' one could use to dilute brandy down with please? so it will at least get used. perhaps a fruit juice of some kind or something like that? would any of the usual, tonic water or soda water or ginger ale work well? thanks for advice.

A few years ago, I visited the Hennesey distillery in Cognac (worth a visit if you're down there), and after the tour we were served Cognac mixed with a good deal of soda water.

It made a nice aperitif.

Brandy and Soda's an old-established mix and Brandy and Cola usually goes down well. Not normally drunk with fruit mixers because of its own very strong flavour. Some people mix it with other alcoholic drinks like Babycham or Champagne.

How about cooking with it? Steak Diane, anyone? Pepper sauce with a kick? Is it too early to start mixing the Christmas pudding?

Failing all that, do yourself a nice pancake, pour the offending spirit on top of said pancake, and set light to it. (Not recommended for camping holidays, this one.)

Blimey - Brandy and Babycham - i've known a few girls who's favourite drink that was ! Very popular in the 70's

Excuuuuuuuuuuuuse me, not just the girls. Then they changed Babycham to a new improved version and it tasted horrible mixed with brandy after that.

It's special baby booze for new-borns (baby champagne - geddit?). Do you not give booze to babies in the States? I toughens 'em up you know.

I was brought up on Bourbon Manhattans since I was a wee tot. Started just sucking the marascino cherry from my Granda's cocktail.

What a waste, unless it is a cheap and nasty brandy.

Someone has to do the job.

You do NOT want to know!

If you are unlucky, and really, really, stupid (you don't have to be a Yank however).

No one knows what it is, although there are many things it is not: tasty, enjoyable, complex, good value, etc.

No! At least not if you have any sense of taste, which, given that you are here I would presume you have.

Only if you've got the right plug-in software - seems to be another of those sites that think looking good is more important than conveying information. Still, everyone in Britain over 40 knows that Babycham is (sing along now) "The Genuine Champagne Perry".

They can't call it that nowadays, of course, the people of Champagne would get upset, and people who love perry would get upset, but you get the gist - it's a fizzy drink made from squashed fermented pears and I daresay a few other things.

Actually jw, don't listen to these suggestions. The brandy has, by now, 'gone off', and is probably very poisonous. I am one of the few people able to successfully dispose of such dangerous liquids. Pack it very carefully, and send it to me. I don't charge for this service, as I just consider it a public duty.

Keith, what a wag you are sir !

wag = (HUMOROUS PERSON) Show phonetics noun [C] OLD-FASHIONED INFORMAL a humorous person who likes to make jokes

Somehow Stuart, I find that statement very disturbing ! :-)

A work colleague of mine some years ago fancied himself as a bit of a Lothario and started chatting up a young woman (about half his age!) at a bar. He offered to buy her a drink and she asked for a Brandy and Babycham. He was aghast, told her that was 2 drinks and beat a hasty retreat. He was thinking more in terms of a Light Ale.
