Off to Galway city in the next 10 days - does anyone know if there are any microbreweries in the city? or know the best place to get stout?
any recommendations will be appreciated.

Sadly, none that I'm aware of.
Almost any of the boozers. If you are stopping in Dublin on the way over, have a ganders at The Porterhouse at the end of Temple Bar. They brew all their own beers and I think they are very good.
