Holmfirth/Huddersfield Pubs??

Gonna be there in less than a week, for a 2 week stay. Gonna hit the Sair, all the pubs in Holmfirth, and the pubs and brewpub in Marsden.

Else, I am open to suggestions to any and all pubs, esp those that do GOOD meals, withing easy hiking or driving distance of downtown (heh!) Holmfirth.

Please Tell Me Where To Go!

Can't help with food pubs specifically, but Huddersfield offers several good real ale venues. These include the Rat & Ratchet (Ossett Brewery, current Huddersfield CAMRA pub of the year), The Grove, The Station Tavern (on the railway station, as is the Head of Steam, where the beer is considerably more expensive), and the Star.

There is a good bus service between Huddersfield and Holmfirth.

If hiking to the Sair, be aware that it's closed lunchtimes except Sat/Sun (or certainly was last time I slogged up the hill from the main road on a Thursday only to find the doors shut ..and this on one of the hottest days of the year)

Also, the Riverhead Brewery Tap is now an Ossett pub and now only has a very limited choice of beers brewed on the premises.

The Wharfeside (Copper Dragon pub in Slaithwaite) seems to do decent food and is worth stopping off at if you're walking up the Hudds Narrow Canal towards Marsden.

Thanks for the info. I can't find the Sair's hours online. When are they open?? I'd have thought lunch time would be big business for a pub??

More and more pubs now are not opening at lunchtimes except at weekends.

OK, you can't expect a pub to open if there is little or no business, but it's more evidence of the general decline of the trade.

I lived in Huddersfield for many years. My favourite beer pub was without doubt The Slubbers Arms. A little way (about 1.5 miles) outside the town centre, so hop in a taxi if necessary. It's a Taylor's pub, and the beer was always beautifully kept in my day (abut

5 years ago now). The Rat & Ratchet is good too but very studenty and crowded at times.

The Sair is indeed an interesting experience. I had a good few pints of Enoch's Hammer in there.

Or try the Taylor's at the Shoulder of Mutton, Lockwood, if it's more convenient.

A more exceptional Lockwood feature is an ice-cream shop which makes its own ice-cream, and it's remarkably good too.

Is that a Timothy Taylor's pub? And if it is, what other beers does it sell. It's in striking distance of me :-)

Wasdale Head Inn, which brews its own beers (Great Gable Brewery) is making an ice cream out of one of its beers! Can't remember which one and have yet to taste it...... But as a beer-lover and ice-cream lover, I'm looking forward to it.

If you like that sort of thing, the New Charnwood in Heckmondwike, 45 minutes bus ride from Huddersfield, has homemade Ice Cream flavoured with Taylor's Landlord and endorsed by the brewery! They of course have Landlord on handpull too, together with a mild or dark ale and an Ossett guest

No, and although its history for the last 24 years has been faithfully relayed to me, my recollection's foggy. Very foggy.

Landlord used to be rather inconsistent, and when it was on form the first person to try it would look round at the rest of the group and say sadly "It's going to be a hard weekend."
