Holmfirth again

Going back to Holmfirth in April for several weeks. Soliciting suggestions for pubs and brew-pubs in the general area. Hoping we are early enough to miss all the blonde beers we hit last time ;-)

Now what's that pub called where Compo, Clegg and Foggy used to drink? :-)

If the Sair is the brew-pub over by Linthwaite, we missed it last year due to a short stay with lots to do. Will definitely get there this time.

In Holmfirth, we loved the Nook. We had some good meals in The Bridge, and had great beer and food in a small pub over in Thongsbridge (???). We liked another one or two pubs in Holmfirth, but they were not serving food when we were there.

In Marsden, we had some nice beers out at the Tunnel End, and also at a brew-pub in Marsden center -- I hope those are still there.

We would like to travel down the Holme valley to Holme and Holmbridge. Any interesting pubs thata way??

Also want to travel down into the Peak district for one or two days. Suggestions???

The latter would be the Riverhead Brewery tap, recently bought by Ossett Brewery's pub company, so you should get beers from both breweries in there now (if my understanding of the position is correct).

From Ossett's web site

A full refurbishment of the brewery will commence on Monday January 15th and is expected to take one week. As for the future, we plan to continue producing all of the existing Riverhead brands as well as new special and experimental brews. These will be available throughout the Ossett estate as guest beers.

Also the Nook in Holmfirth has received planning permission to build a brewery behind the pub. I suspect April may be a little early though unless they've got a move on.

Is the Sycamore still in Thong's Bridge???

What about Hervey's??

From Holmfirth? Tricky. Depends on how you're travelling. But even in a car, north-south journeys are awkward, they cut across the grain of the hills.

I suppose the "must see" pub in the Peak District is still the Three Stags' Heads at Wardlow Mires (here - ). How you'll get there is another matter. I have vague memories of a long-winded bus route from Bradford to Matlock on summer weekends, but I may be mixing that up with the Yorkshire Dales.

is a good place to start your research.

Yes, or it could be in Strines (I think - visits there were usually at the end of a long Sunday lunchtime when I wasn't driving! Those were the days...)

The other one they were often seen at was the wonderfully named 'Will O'Nats' above Meltham.

Is there anywhere that has more odd pub names than Huddersfield ( Will O' Nats, Sair, Nont Sarahs, Rat and Ratchet, Jack O' Mitre, Slubbers)

Rat & Ratchet's a made-up name, it used to be - er, what was it? The Commercial?

There's a lot of it about. A nice pub in Alderley Edge with its own bowling green used to be called the Moss Rose. Now it's the Drum and Monkey. :-(

In article , Martin writes

Kirk Stile (pronounced steel), real name Beaumont Arms but hardly ever called that by Yetoners (Kirkheatoners).

I've just remembered the Ling Bob and the Flappit, both to the west of Bradford.
