Oakham OK now?

I'm not sure if it's all good news (council says it's "highly likely" the brewpub will have to move home!) but at least the idea of Oakham in P'boro is supported by the council, & hopefully they won't have to move. cheers MikeMcG

_____________________ WESTGATE: Brewery pub singled out for development

THE future is looking brighter for a popular pub, after a developer was told it must include the building in its new plans for the city.

Peterborough City Council has insisted that the Brewery Tap should be a key part of the multi-million-pound North Westgate project.

There were fears that the Westgate pub, which brews and sells its own beer on the site, could be swallowed up by the ambitious proposals, which could get off the ground as early as next summer.

But senior officials working on the Masterplan – a blueprint for the city's future, which includes eight major developments – say they have listened to the concerns and responded.

Liz Wade, head of economic regeneration at the council, said: "We have listened to various representations and singled out the pub in our development brief.

"This is what we want to see – successful local businesses that make Peterborough special. There are not many pubs that brew their own beer."

However, Ms Wade said it would be "highly likely" that the pub would have to move to another site to make way for much bigger retail units.

Jamie Howley, assistant manager of the pub, said he was pleased it had been included in the plans.

But he added: "We are going to have to wait and see what the developers want to do. Obviously, it would be a worry if we were moved."

The plans for North Westgate include a large department store, a huge gymnasium, restaurants, luxury flats and a remodelling of the Queensgate shopping centre.

It is hoped the Masterplan will be rubber-stamped next year.

Concern over amount of parking space CITY councillors have expressed concern about the availability of car parking space in the North Westgate development.

As reported in The Evening Telegraph, members have asked for assurances from the developers that the number of spaces increases to meet future demand.

There are currently 450 spaces in the North Westgate area, with another 2,300 available at the nearby Queensgate shopping centre.

Councillors said the main reason people came to Peterborough was to park their car conveniently, do their shopping, and return home.
