That's called churlishness. A post has one writer but many readers therefore it is sensible to consider the majority when posting. BTW, you centre-posted. Aim to trim all extraneous material from follow-ups, including unnecessary blank lines, so that, if possible, readers are presented with a single screen.

Yup.

It's the wave of zeigeist Hewlett Packard are trying to surf with their HYPE gallery.

Hype Nation is what we have become. A nation obsessed with hype and vapourware.

I wondered what that noise was :o)

Nope, I'd not heard of Skitt's Law. I'll get me pointy hat and sit quietly in the corner...

Ah well. At least I didn't shout. BTW, one exclamation mark emphasises the writer's point whereas the comprehensive system's string of exclamation marks emphasises something quite different.

How does one top post? I can't get into the messages to alter them. As so many people object to the practice it must be fun. Is it my IE6 settings?

One carefully shifts the cursor to the topmost point in the quoted text (or allows OE to guide you to a point anyone with more three braincells will avoid)

Of course this is a clear sign that you actually wish potential recipients to direct your "wit and wisdom" (har, har) to the digital dustbin. Happily for the world many people actually run decent filtering systems - your task should you wish to accept it is to find out how many such entrances to said dustbin are now open to you.

No - something more serious than that :)

Charlie.

The problem doesn't lie with IE6 -- your web browser -- but with Outlook Express. You're using version 6.00.2800.1158. One would've hoped by now that Microsoft would've addressed its many vulnerabilities but they haven't, and probably never will because the darn thing is an endless source of aggravation for them and doesn't generate revenue to support improvements. It was originally a mail client but some hasty patching turned it into an abortion of a news client.

There are some excellent, inexpensive mail/news clients around. See the Good Net-Keeping guide at

for a rundown of their strengths and weaknesses. OE is all weaknesses.

And astonishingly it seems to be getting worse rather than better with each new release. The GNKSA site gives the following figures for the percentage of MUSTs that OE complies with:

Microsoft Outlook Express 4.71.1712.1 [85%], 5.00.2314.1300 [77%],

5.50.4522.1200/DE [67%], 6.00.2600.0000/DE [67%]

I've got some instructions on how to configure Outlook correctly on my website at

Well! I sent my first post, and that's what I get? With few exceptions a bunch of anally retentive lifeless geeks who waste everyone's time with foul-mouthed diatribes about posting etiquette! If you can't be bothered getting a life (or at least getting out of the house occasionally) then at least don't clutter newsgroups with your stereotypically geekish attitude problems. I've just wasted precious minutes of my life going through your layers of crap, desperately hoping to find something in there which is "on topic", yet you are worried by my "top posting"!

Anyway, I shall happily stop upsetting you all by unsubscribing from this group immediately, and let you lot get on with it. Oh, and by the way, don't bother with my earlier advice about getting a life, because I would hate to find myself trying to from escape from any of you at the bar of my local.

Love and best wishes, hope you soon get better.

- Stanley.

Thanks to all who responded helpfully. It was my own fault, I had failed to tick 'Include message text in reply' following re-installation after formatting my drive. What an unpleasant person you are Steven Pampling. I have already directed your 'wit and wisdom' (qoutation not speech marks I think) to my digital dustbin. Every strength to a future planning application for Rugby airport!

Hmmm.

Methinks someone has a short fuse and a strange mind. The strangest thing is the people giving forth on the subject of bad language seem to be the ones using it.

Was that a passing herd of trolls do you think?
