Safeway - shurely shome mishtake?

just cleared the shelves of my (not very) local Safeway of the last few bottles they had of US Victory HopDevil IPA at 69PENCE!!!

This beer is only distributed in certain US states, yet has an enormous reputation (IMO fairly deserved).

myself & friends who used to live in Philadelphia shared all four tonight.

apologies to anyone who would like to pay more for this, I was simply surprised & happy! :~)

and before a cry of "cheapskate brewery-killer" goes up - I also paid

10 times as much for one bottle of Dogfish Worldwide Stout (which is only a piffling 21% this year!)

spotted & also bought Dogfish Raison d'Etre, Brooklyn Black Choc Stout & Victory Golden Monkey (all good & strong beers, 355ml(?) & c1.50UKP each) cheers MikeMcG

If you have cleared the shelves, tell us where you live so we don't have a wasted journey.

Tony.

You should by now be seeing Sierra Nevada Pale Ale from California.

In a few weeks there should be Alaskan Winter something or other brewed with spruce tips. Divine.

I know the importer and was invited to a Safeway preview tasting last week.

but then you might come around & clear my shelves! :~) I'm on the Wirral, the store is in West Kirby

I only cleared what was there - I've no reason to believe they've got no more

The imported version says its BCA (hard to see the yeast tho) & tastes very good indeed - even stood up to a curry. cheers MikeMcG

hmmm from dogfish.com -

*2003 UPDATE: *Our brewers all agree the 2003 batch is the best WorldWide Stout we've ever *made. This year's version ended up at 18.8% abv. It is roasty, balanced, and *with more of a hop and carbonation profile than years past.

but my Safeway bottle - (different to the 23% version I tried at GBBF in August) says 21%Vol & a BBD of "9/Ages Well" so I don't know who is right :~) cheers MikeMcG

ah - top-posting to my own posting - I just don't care! :~)

anyway, re the strength of Dogfish World Wide Stout, I just spotted this on - it reaches us somewhat convolutedly from Dogfish's brewer (John Gilooly) via a belgian beerfan (Joris Pattyn) a website (ratebeer.com) & another beerfan (Cornelia C.) but here it is -

"Here's the story on the World Wide Stout-we did 2 batches this year, one at 21%, most of which we sold in the UK, and the primary batch, which came in @ 18.8%. Since we released some of the 21% batch domestically (US), there has been some confusion about the abv. Unfortunately, I can't think of any way to tell which batch is which by looking at the bottle. Taste-wise, the 18.8% is much less sweet."

interestingly & related to another current topic - while searching about a bit, I found out that all Dogfish Head beers are suitable for veggies & vegans (apart from Midas Touch which has honey - so may not be OK for vegans), then I found out a further bit of interesting info, which I'll post in the veggie/ vegan thread.
