Bulmers Cider allegedly makes people sick.

I'm trying to be careful here for fear of being sued, so I'll just c&p from the icWales site instead! following text from icWales, v.long url -

____________________________________ A WELSH pensioner with Legionnaires disease was last night improving as investigations into the outbreak in Hereford centred on a brewery.

Preliminary tests have revealed the legionella bacteria that causes the flu-like disease is present in a cooling tower at the Bulmers cider plant in Hereford.

Public health experts are continuing tests to determine whether this is the source of the outbreak which has infected 10 people and killed two.

Part of the Bulmers factory has been closed but although the leading brewers, which makes Strongbow cider, has admitted that the results were "possibly positive", it said that even if confirmed they would not necessarily pinpoint the source of the outbreak to the firm.

"The results are presumptive positive, or possibly positive but it does not follow that the cooling tower is the source of the outbreak," a Bulmers spokesman said.

"That part of the factory has been closed and will be disinfected as a precautionary measure but the company is operating normally.

"There is also no risk to the public from drinking our products, which are unaffected." _________________________________

Cider makers are not brewers.

Although I have very little time for most of Bulmers' products, I think the whole tone of these press reports are very unfair to the company. There can be no justification in suggesting that the cider produced by Bulmers makes people sick - unless you drink too much of it! But that applies to any alcoholic drink.

The cooling towers are presumably well separated from the cider making areas, and I cannot see any way in which the legionella bacteria could get into the cider. In any case, if it did, the acidity and alcohol of the cider would almost certainly kill it.

Bulmers are having a bad time at present, one way or another, but it should be remembered that they employ a lot of people, have very extensive cider apple orchards for breeding different varieties, make excellent cider brandy, and have a very fine museum of cider making.

Very fairly put, Roy. Mind you, although I like cider, I *still* don't like theirs:-)

So they are, but even though they now own Bulmers, that doesn't make Bulmers a brewer or their premises a brewery.

I hadn't heard that anyone had suggested/hinted that Bulmer's cider makes people sick (erm, apart from my facetious thread heading above, of course)

hmm I didn't know about most of that - all good stuff. MikeMcG
