Removing the double negative, I take it you're saying 'free markets provide what people want'. This is clearly not the case with non-smoking pubs. Further, pubs are a long way from being 'free market' - they are among the more heavily regulated parts of the economy.

In industry? Well, there are regulated exposures in some cases, but this has nothing to do with removing a completely unnecessary and preventable source.

Clean air. Better health. Cleaner clothes. No ash trays. No filthy ash/stubs. No burn marks. Reduced risk of fire. No excuses to smoke indoors.

I can't wait!

I find the wait too long, mean time I might visit the Duke of York in lower Richmond Road a bit more.

I doubt many pubs will be replacing burnt furniture and carpets on 1 July.

I am not convinced the risk was ever very high.

However few (if any) drinkers considered it acceptable to piss over other peoples' clothes, so an anti-alcohol campaign would not get anything like the support of anti-smoking. I guess things might change if people ever got into the habit of urinating on bar staff and food...

I just hope the pubs can win back the people my age (20s) who now see "real" pubs (rather than trendier things) as being places to be avoided, where solitary smelly old men sit and smoke.

A pub that I visited yesterday has included another large space as non-smoking. The difference in air quality is even more evident, now that smokers are contained in the remaining 'third' of the pub.

Or wait until England catches up with the rest of the civilised world.
