kegerator emergency - can i tap a keg horizontally?

I am having a kegerator emergency!

I have built a kegerator out of a chest freezer that holds a 1/2 barrel or 50l and a 1/4 barrel.

I just purchased my first keg of Isenbeck/Warstiner Dunkel which is a

30l. I did the calculations and it holds about 5 more liters that a normal quater barrel so I thought it would fit albeit slightly tighter. It turns out it is a few inches taller than the 1/4 barrels! I cannot shut the lid with the tap on top. A low-boy is not an option since this is a Warsteiner which takes the German Slider (Flach Zapfkopf auf Deutschland).

Anyway, they keg will fit horizontally and still leave room for the keg coupler. Will this work? Will this have any negative affect on the beer? Whatever is left after my Oktoberfest party I hope to have stay fresh as usual for a month or two!

Thanks,

Chris

You cant be serious. the beer is brought up through a tube reaching to the bottom. It wont work. That teacher who told you there are no stupid questions lied; that is a stupid question.

You are a fool. You are not going to have beer of the same quality as a fresh keg after two months. You should buy bottles.

Hi Jeff,

Indeed I am serious in my question. Thank you so much for your insulting response. People like you are what make this world such a joy to live in. At least people like you make a good reason for drinking beer. Cheers to you!

By the way, I have had over half a dozen kegs served from this kegerator. Many spent a few months and tasted wonderful their entire life. The only beer that I had that tasted bad was Miller Lite after

5 months. No German beer ever had a noticeable change in flavor.

Perhaps in the future you can refrain from answering messages if you feel that they are too far beneath your superior knowledge. I have had many kind responses to my past questions from participants of this group. I am glad that others are willing to help those with questions rather than put them down.

Thank *YOU* Jeff,

Chris

A little late now, but for the future you might consider building a collar like this...

Gives you a few more inches of height.
