Its not the real thing of course, compared to draught beer from a Munich beer hall -- but is it close? Or is it specially brewed for the export market?

That AFAIK should be the bona fide thing...the big question mark, tho, is : has it been pasteurised for export or is it only filtered, as it is over there ? Does a huge difference...
Does it? I'm not looking to start a fight, but many -- MANY, not all -- European breweries DO pasteurize, even their draft beer, a flash-pastuerization that doesn't 'cook' the beer like the tunnel pasteurization used in America does. Anchor uses this too. I've talked to a Paulaner brewer who swore up and down that there is no discernable taste difference between the beer before and after pasteurization. What do you know about this?

I know a few things about this . . .
1) in my experience some german brewers can have a tendency to be economical with the truth - especially if that supports their thesis that german beer is the best in the world. (if you're a german brewer I've met - well obviously I don't mean *you* - you're the enlightened minority)2) if a food/drink is processed - even slightly & carefully IMO it is changed (chemically & taste-wise) tropicana orange juice (etc) is IIRC only flash-pasteurised & thus has a shorter shelf-life & better flavour than other OJs, but is it same (& as tasty) as fresh squeezed that morning - no.
For beer - is flash-pasteurise IMO better than higher temp & longer pasteurise - sure, absolutely; is it better than sterile-filter - well that's debateable & I'd say probably not; would I prefer unfiltered, unpasteurised? - every time I think (I realise this aint always practical) cheers MikeMcG posting after several pints of Cain's cask dark mild & bitter plus decent live jazz at the Old Colonial pub Birkenhead, Merseyside, UK.
I'd heard that Interbrew was looking for yet another big target; Holsten has offered itself to interested buyers, but Interbrew already has a north-German brewery with Beck's. But Spaten- Loewenbraeu? Oy. The mind boggles. Something tells me that Nuernberg's about to see another brewery shut down, too; I'll bet you even money that Interbrew will close Tucher and consolidate production in Munich.
Right, like you drink so much of the stuff now, with the selection of local beer like you have...
