Paulaner Weissbier

So I've been converted. No more crappy Amstels and Black Labels. At the Waterfront in Cape Town I had a Paulaner Weissbier, apparently it is brewed with the same recipe as that brewed at the actual monastery in Germany. It's not pasteurized or filtered and it was absolutely amazing.

Who knew beer could taste this good?

What monastery would that be, considering that Paulaner is part-owned by Heineken? Weissbier ("white" beer, but really "wheat" beer) isn't particularly associated with monastic brewing.

So European imports are not easily found in South Africa ... ?

A lot of us. Welcome, and if you want to experience even more, perhaps you could save up a few rand for a trip to Europe, particularly Belgium, Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic.

Funny you should mention that. I'll be there in just a few days, planning to tour the Franconian countryside and stop in at a few of the remaining 275 Franconian breweries (perspective: 15 years ago, there were 380), and maybe even cross over into the Oberpfalz for more old- fashioned goodness.

Britain, Scotland, Holland, Sweden or Denmark isn't that bad either.
