Carbon Filter

Dec 08, 2004 5 Replies

Hi Guys.

Sorry if this is the wrong newsgroup to ask this in but it was the only one I could find.

My son & I are new to home brewing and have turned our attention to alcohol and distilling.

To date, each time I run a batch through the still, after I have watered it down to 40% I run the alcohol through a Z filter filled with carbon. I then replace the carbon with new carbon and filter it again.

I have been told I can keep the 2nd batch of carbon to filter through the first run of the next batch of alcohol before throwing it out and replacing it with fresh carbon for the 2nd filtering. (I hope that was not too confusing!!)

My question is: If I purchased another Z filter and kept one for the first run of filtering and the other for the 2nd run, would I still need to replace the carbon as often, or could I reuse it a couple of times?

Depends in what contry you live. Internet is a wonderfull tool because it can put together people from around the world. Never assume that because something is illegal in your contry it is wverywhere.

I heard that distillation is legal (with restriction) in New Zealand if i remember corectly. Distillation had been outlawed in lots of places mostly for 3 reasons : Quality (can be dangerous if you do not know what you do), money (governement don't get tax if you do your own booze) and lobby (protect big company market). Personnally i think that the 2 last reason are more important for some governement than the first. If you do some distillation for yourself you will make sure that it won't be harmfull before going in that hobby, it's only if you try to make fast $$ by selling it that you may be less carefull.

Not here in Australia it isn't.

Each week we produce roughly 16 litres (4 Gallons) of 40% proof pure alcohol from our home based still. From that we make Whisky, Bourbon, Tequila, Jim Beam PLUS liqueurs like Bailys, Kalua, Crème De Cocao etc.

It's good fun and taste's just as good as the reel thing!!
