My question is can I lay a corney on it's side to save space in the back of the fridge or does it have to be sitting upright to work?
I figured if I had the Dip tube side pointing down then I would be able to do this?

In most kegs, the dip tube runs to the middle of the bottom, so you'd only be able to dispense half the beer.

I would not do this. Get yourself set up so you can dispense from the upright position. I know you can purchase kegs that are half sized from listermann.com
