I'm wanting to try a recipe which requires steeping grains. I have a couple of questions which I was wondering if someone could help with:
1.) What forms of "grain bags" can I use (other than the traditional muslin / nylon bags - sold in brew supply shops). Can I use a cheese cloth - cut to size? I thought that I also once read that someone used a clean white cotton tube sock - any truth to this?
2.) After heating the water to approximately 160º F, do I shut the heat off while steeping for the 30 minutes or do I leave the heat on and regulate the temperature?
3.) How fine does the grain need to be crushed, or does it just need to be crushed - exposing the inside?
4.) Once the steeping time has elapsed, is it necessary to rinse the grain bag with additional water, or can I simply squeeze it out?
Thank you all for any help that you can give.
