Brooke Bond Taj Mahal

I just came back from the local Indian grocery store. I went there hoping to stock up on Brooke Bond Taj Mahal tea bags, only to find that they only had loose tea and string-and-tag tea bags, not the larger round bags that I prefer and have gotten there in the past. The store's stock seemed to be low on all of its tea brands, so I am hoping that the round bags are just out of stock and will be back on the shelves shortly. The checkout clerk didn't know when I asked her. So does anyone here know if Brooke Bond is still making Taj Mahal in round bags? I really do prefer the round ones because they hold more tea, are cheaper, and are heat-sealed rather than stapled.

Thanks.

Didn't even know there *were* such things as round Taj Mahal tea bags, and I've been using them for more than a decade,,,

I've seen them at my local Indian Grocery just recently, but their stock tends to hang around for quite some time so that is no real indicator. I only buy my Taj Mahal tea in loose form, you get a ton more for the money. Not that it is expensive, but still.

is this 'Taj Mahal' a masala chai in bags?

No. Tea India does a baggged masala chai tea, as well as regular tea bags and loose tea.

No, it is a strong sturdy assam which takes a goodly number of spices (say crushed cardamom, stick cinnamon, some ginger, black pepper, crushed cloves -- boil all these spices at least 5 minutes before adding the tea. loose or in bags (remember that bag tea tends to be ready quicker because it consists of smaller particles). You can sweeten the brew with honey, and if you want to be really autentic heat the milk seperately, so that adding it to the mix at the end won't interefere with the "marriage" of the spices.

What was the packaging like? Brooke Bond has a new logo. They updated the packaging for the loose tea a few months ago, and the string and tag teabags are now in new packaging as well. If you saw the round bags in the new packaging, that would at least indicate that Unilever is still making the round bags.

Here's an example of the old packages:

And the new:

It was the old style packaging. I did see a box of loose with the new package though. Next time I'm out there I'll let you know, in fact I'll just buy a box or two and send you one if they have it. I think it is like $3.99 a box so with shipping it couldn't be more than $5-6. Even if your not interested, no biggie, I'll pick it up anyhow.

Thanks. I'm going to check back in a couple of weeks and see if they have it. They seemed to be out of a lot of things -- they were all out of Tetley and Tea India in bags, so maybe they just need to get some new stock in. I'll let you know.

As an aside, I did call Unilever Canada at the 800 number shown on the box of string and tag teabags I bought to tie me over. It was a non-working number, which is strange, since you'd think the new packaging would have a current number on it. So I called the number on my box of Lipton Yellow Label. The person I talked to didn't know the answer, either, but at least seemed to be willing to try and find out, even after she found out that I'm not in Canada. We'll see if the effort bears any fruit!!
