Effects of caffein

Caffeine can prevent sleep and makes you agitated- so the story goes. I can confirm the agitation but sleep is another matter. It seems to be highly individual and depending on a lot of other circumstances whether one can sleep after tea or not. What are the experiences of tea addicts?

I'm no addict (honest!), but I can say that I never had trouble falling asleep after tea, at least not more than usual. Then again, I never drink more than one small cup of a weak tea.

I get a very unpleasant feeling if I drink too much caffeine or eat too much sugar. I can't describe it, but it's as much a body feeling as a mind feeling. I sometimes get it from drinking too much water, too! This could be because my body is very sensitive because for last few years I did not eat meat, any spices, almost no salt and little sugar.

In a Yoga book I read, tea is classed together with other Rajasic food items, all of which "incite passion and emotions", and are unsuitable for yoga practice.

Dear JB:

My experience is- it's all depend on person to person. For me without a light cup of tea such as Darjeeling,Sencha or someother green tea, I can't even close my eyes. Actually here I see, people talk a lot about many cups of tea or many differents kinds of brewing theory and taste. But as a true tea lover, my advice always is-FOLLOW YOUR HEART. Caffeine issue is also like a personal choice. As james Norwood Pratt answered of a question-how to become a tea expert? the answer was-"Pleasure is the love, not the expertise."

I definitely have to watch my tea consumption, unfortunately, or I will get jittery and be unable to sleep. In the evening I have to limit myself to decafs (definitely inferior!) or tisanes. Sometimes I save the leaves that I've steeped once earlier in the day, and do my second and third infusions in the evening. Enough of the caffeine is gone so that it won't keep me awake. I also find that the effects of caffeine seem to be cumulative. If I've abstained for a few days, I can have more tea without it affecting me than if I've been drinking several cups a day for a while.

Here's another thought on the subject. It's not just a question of whether you are able to sleep after drinking caffeine, but also of the *quality* of sleep. Some scientists say that

*everyone's* sleep quality is disturbed by evening intake of caffeine, whether they are aware of it or not. Of course the same goes for late evening alcohol intake.

I drink about three cups of green tea in the evening, and find it profoundly relaxing and (if anything) condusive to sleep. It does have a lower caffeine content but the stimulating effect of the caffeine is what keeps me drinking it.

Of course it can stimulate and relax. The two are not mutually exclusive.
