Japanese Greens at Sears Roebuck

In their 1897 catalog, that is. "Japan -- Sun Dried, Green. For purity and richness of flavor, they are unexcelled." Kind of a long shot, I know, but has anyone reading tried this?...

50 cents/lb, but only 43 cents/lb if you buy a 35lb half chest. They also offer a "Basket-fired, Black" from Japan. The Japan teas are cheaper than the other styles offered, including Ceylon Pekoe, Moning Congou, Gunpowder Moyune, Formosa Oolong, English Breakfast, and assorted Indias.

"Order 10 or 20 pounds -- order enough to last six months."

I'm inspired.

I just did a little simple arithmetic and found that I use between 20 and 25 pounds of dry leaf per year. This includes tea I consume myself and tea drunk together with others. It does not include any tea I drink out in restaurants or friend's places.

Curious to know how that compares.

I figure me to be a little below 20lb a year. I'm certainly not going through 2lbs in a month.

I could actually come up with something a bit more definitive and empirical, given the fact that I have *never* thrown away an empty tea package. My numbers are based on my newly acquired habit of drinking lots of oolongs in a gung fu pot, into which goes lots of leaf. Skimping on the leaf ruins gungfu IMHO. More accurately, looking backward, 5 grams of green tea as opposed to 12ish grams of oolong yield the same amount of liquor, more or less. Likewise, reds. So, my loosey goosey numbers are based on two gungfu setups sometime during the day plus one green later. Whatever. It's not rocket science. If it were, I wouldn't be in it.
