Lady Grey

Feb 23, 2004 7 Replies

Hi Gang,

I am considering making a batch of Lady Grey tea. Does anyone know the recipe, or even the proportional ingredients... any guesses will do ( I have my assumptions but would love confirmation).

I KNOW this sounds like a stupid question, but it is for real. I blend and flavour 10 - 50 kg batches of tea. I've become very proficient in the flavours I know, and want to reach out a bit. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (((I'll also send you samples once complete!!)))

Thanks,

Tim

Tim,

It actually tells you the contents on the side of the tin - black tea with orange peel (3%), lemon peel (2%), cornflowers and then unspecified flavourings.

Thanks Andy,

That helps. What brand is that? The flavour>

Tim,

Lady Grey is a registered name of Twinings so there really is only one brand, unlike Earl Grey that has become a generic. The flavoring is bergamot - the same as Earl Grey and the same sort of tea blend Chinese and Indian (though what Chinese and what Indian teas!?!). Recently Twinings Earl Grey has said bergamot flavoring and not bergamot oil as I think was once used. Go easy on the bergamot though - see the thread about drinking too much Earl Grey;-) I notice that the Lady Grey® loose tea and the tea bags contain differing percentages of lemon peel the tea bags contain 3%.

Lady Grey® is very popular amongst my female friends and acquaintances here (Japan) and I must say I find it quite pleasant too... to be drunk in addition to Earl Grey in the interests of equality, of course;-)

Cheers, AndyM

Thanks Andy!

I am tracking down some suitable base teas. I have a super Keemun tea that I will use, and am awaiting a shipment of a subltle Darjeeling. Should be perfect for a new blend! Now what to name it... hmmm.....

suggestions

My News Server has fairly poor retention, I can't find the post on drinking too much Earl Grey, could you tell me what it said? Thanks!

I tried to email it to you but it bounced. Email me and I'll reply with the post text rather than posting the rather long text here again...

Cheers, Scott

If you go here

formatting link

And search for "too much earl grey" in the first box (quotes not necessary) , while putting this group (of course) in the newsgroups box, the thread should be the very first link in the list of results.
