Lapsang Search

Greetings all. Long time "lurker," first time poster. If you would please--I could use some assistance. I have a distinct fondness for lapsang souchong teas--BUT--a long time ago in a land far-far away (Hong-Kong actually) I was a guest and was served a lapsang that reminded me of being a kid walking down the rail-road tracks on a hot August day. The creosote taste of that tea was some kinds of powerful--I have been hoping to find a lapsang with that kind of power ever since with no luck--I've drunk some excellent teas in my search, but nothing with the power and strength that tea had--would anyone care to suggest some lapsang that might fill the "Billy?" Thanks--and thanks to you all for many hours of enjoyment and quite a bit of knowledge--not all of it restricted to tea either. TomK

Tom,

Where are you located. I sometimes stop into a place in New York City called Java 'n Jazz where I invariably order a pot of Russian Caravan that has the wonderful creosote taste you describe. What a pleasure. For me it brings back those tarry boat docks of my ill spent youth. The next time I visit J+J I'll get more information on this for you.

I once got some cheap Lapsang at Pearl River Mart, also in New York City, that was like a mouthful of creosote (but delicious). I think it came in one of those very ornate tins.

The creosotey-est lapsang I've tried is Hu-Kwa.

You can see an old cannister in the background usually when they pan in for a shot of Terry on the Kovels Antiques show. Maybe my tea tins will be worth something someday.
