Scales For Weighing Tea

Hello All,

Has anyone bought one of the small "pocket" scales listed on Ebay for weighing tea? I have expensive scales at work for weighing other types of things, but have never use any of these small ones.

Thanks,

Alton

I use Dealextreme. Some people have had trouble with them so don't mistake my experience for an endorsement, but I've always done OK with them. They have decent ( accurate to 0.01g) scales for like $10.

Thanks Dominic. Here is a link to a YouTube video of the scale you mentioned:

Just saw the same scale on eBay for $6.00 + $12.00 shipping to the U.S. from Hong Kong.

Well I'm glad my crazy obscure Internet vendor knowledge came in handy. If you ever need any iPod/cell/game accessories they are usually my goto place on the world wide intertubes. iPod cases and cables are dirt cheap and decent quality there, I think I pay like $2 for USB iPod cables and like $1 for screen protectors. Just remember it comes from overseas so they state it is like 2-3 days to ship and then up to 14 to receive. People get bent out of shape and dislike them because they expect warp speed shipping for free from overseas.

I have not bought one off of Ebay, but I have one that I bought from Edmund Scientific twenty years ago. It's a balance, not a spring scale, and it only has a limited range without additional weights. It is remarkably accurate within that range, though, and I have used it for measuring out photochemistry in the field.

got my scales today, 10$ including shipping this scale is up to 1000g and is great. found out i am using 4.5 g of tea when i should use 2.5 so wonder the taste was strong!!!

it will pay for itself in tea savings very quick i am thinking about getting one for home and office, at the price it is a deal!!!

Great! I'm glad it worked out well for you! I actually just ordered a new one myself a couple weeks back and I really can't speak highly enough of it for the money. Dealextreme has always served me right, and the combination of pricing and free shipping makes it a great stop for things like iPod gear, flash memory, Nintendo DS rom carts, Chinese kitschy toys, and outdoorsy stuff like flashlights and compasses. Sorry if it sounds like a commercial, but I have really got a lot of value and great stuff over the years and routinely order from them.

I'm always surprised at how I overestimate on tea amounts too, It's also amazing how different teas weigh and the volumes involved. I'm normally not one for mixing my science and my tea, but every now and then a thermometer or scale is handy for double checking your assumptions and making corrections, and for a new user who wants to start out right they are very nice.

I just received two of these scales and they are not working for me. Anything I put on the pan registers as only a few grams. Do they need to be calibrated as stated in the instructions? Or are they calibrated before being shipped?

Thanks,

Only because my fiance did it too: make sure you take the black plastic cover off before trying to use the scale. The scale itself is silver metal and protected by the plastic lid. Most likely that is the case ;)

Holy crap, you're right. I wondered why the "pan" was not flat. Hard to believe I'm an engineer. ;-)

Thanks for the tip. No wonder it only measured a few grams! At least now I won't have to find something weighing exactly 1000 grams to calibrate...

Heh, glad I could help. Well you aren't alone. Don't worry I won't tell a soul... well except for the millions who may read this for eternity... but no one else, I swear ;) I was equally stumped when she kept telling me my scale was useless until I told her to show me. The accuracy goes waaaay up once that pesky cover is off :)

Part of the reason I didn't catch on to the whole "remove cover before use" concept is that the first one (I bought two) seemed to work just fine for small objects. I guess the cover was resting directly on the pan. The second one was acting strangely by not really settling on a measurement.

Live and learn!
