Ultra-cheap TenRen puerh

I want to TenRen this morning and purchased a giant ball of puerh tea. It was wrapped white paper with green Chinese writing on it, and smelled okay. It cost $1.00.

So maybe I have no reason to complain. Actually, the less-than-airtight packaging didn't bode well. Breaking off a chunk of tea turned out to be a little messy. When I infused some, I got a nice deep brown color and a classic woody-earthy puerh aroma. So far, so good.

The taste, unfortunately, just isn't there. Sort of watery.

A fun tea experience, anyway.

That's an extraordinarily low price. You could always use it as a paper weight.

That's perfectly OK with true aged pu-erhs. The little beasties that create the pu-erhness of this tea can continue to operate, making the tea better and better. You can hang them like salami. They won't suffer, except perhaps if you hang them too close to the salami.

Sounds just fine to me.

Yup. That explains the price. Shellac it and use it for a paper weight.

I've been delighted with Aged Lui An teas I've gotten from In Pursuit of Tea and from Imperial Tea Court. These two have somewhat different qualities, but both have taste to match aroma. Also, if you like Silver Needles, IPOT has a Pu-erhized SN that brings together pu-erhness and white tea qualities. Very nice indeed.
