Williamson & Magor Tea?

I have never tried it but have seen it listed online at

Right now, I have found some very cheap teas - so cheap they are practically giving them away - at the local Indian market and I am quite pleased with the quality. So I'm not as inclined to try something expensive as I have been in the past. Because, if I do try it, one of two things will happen:

1. I will really like it and will then have to buy it all the time

or

1. I will be disappointed in it and sorry that I wasted money on it.

Williamson & Magor is a very old company and I'm sure the tea is good, but probably not worth the price your supermarket is asking for it. I suspect that there is perceived value in the name and hence the higher price. You can find other British teas of similar quality such as Taylors of Harrogate, Jacksons of Piccadilly and the UK version of Twinings online, and all of them are less expensive than the W&M.

I've had the English Breakfast teabags, they make a pretty good iced tea and taste like they're more Ceylon or the "drier" teas. They're good but not overwhelmingly so compared to others, I guess I put them in the same catagory as PG Tips though I haven't done a side by side taste test. I got mine because of the cool elephant tin though, I really like those.

I would imagine it would fall into #2 of your list. Not being snobbish but I never see teabags as being anything really worthwhile beyond a quick mediocre cup of tea. For that money I could buy any number of good quality loose teas that I greatly enjoy, but I may try one of them just to say I have. I wasn't expecting it to be the greatest thing since a newly discovered vintage pu-erh, so I guess I knew the answer before asking.

I too buy a lot of my basic teas at the Indian grocery and local Asian stores, I get it dirt cheap and good quality. The indian teas didn't keep my attention after a while though and I quickly lost interest, I'm not a cream/sugar/chai person so that may be why. I'm also lucky in that the strip district has about 10 tea shops and great teas can be had for $10-20/lb.
