2 questions from a novice

Hello, my name is Michel (from the Netherlands) and I have two question which I can't solve by my selve:

- Does Caol Ila have a website..?

- I came across (www) whiskyauction.com. Is anybody familiar with this site..? And is it reliable and possible to purchase a good whisky for a fair/cheap/happy price..? (I've seen prices of 15 euro, which seem to cheap to me... but then the auction was not closed yet...).

Thanks for any input, Michel

Caol Ila doesn't have it's own website as many others. But United has put together at site that covers all of it's distilleries:

Any whiskyauction is a place where you may get a great deal om a malt, but you can also get it the other way around. I'm following a few auctions there myself at the time, but hasn't yet made any purchase through the site.

which I was not familiar with, does have nice info... and reading stuff for hours...

About the whiskyauctions, I don't think I really understand... As far as I understand at this moment (and please correct me if I'm wrong): there is a seller - let's say somebody who bought a 'normal' bottle of Laphroaig for 30 euro... He goes to an auction and starting bid is: 15 euro..? There seems to be no profit to me..? On the other hand I see quite huge prices for whisky's I've even never heard off, and I can imagine people are willing to pay for that... But as a beginner (I have 7 malts on my shelve) and looking for 'bargain's' (although there is always the shipping to the Netherlands...) on cask-strength - older whisky's etc... where should I look..?

I've enjoyed checking the whiskyauction.com website since I discovered it at the begining of this year, but just as a spectator. I've never bid on a whisky there. It's very interesting to see the rare old bottles out there. It's also a good way to get an idea of what whiskies are worth, and what particular whiskies people are most interested in.

The popular ones are often bid up in the last few days before the auction closes. But under Whisky Auction Results (where you can see the amount of the last auction's final prices) you will see some very good bargains, especially for Lowland whiskies and less favored Highlands. Not so much for the Islays and the old Springbanks. Some are just more highly sought out than others.

Michel, one of the best whisky shops in Europe is located in Amsterdam. Check out:

Wonderful selection and very good prices. Take the #2 tram from Centraal Station to Hoofddorpplein #11. You won't regret the trip...unless you spend your rent money. Even then, you'll have plenty of whisky to make you happy again...

The auctions goes over several months, and most whiskies that are sold there are rare ones. Once in a while it might be a standard bottling of Laphroaig. It might be someone who've gotten it as a present, but doesn't like it, or someone who's hard up for cash and clears out his liqour-cabinet to raise some funds.

For Cask Strength whiskies there is always Cadenhead's who've just opened a store in Amsterdam:

For older whiskes you need to go to the real specialist that stock the real expensive stuff. A few places of interest there are: Loch Fyne Whisky -

The shop I use the most is The Whisky Shop in Dufftown -

It hasn't got a webshop, but Ms. Murdoch is more than happy to help you in your quest.

Thanks a lot: Bart, Feroce, Martin, and Anders (other tread...). As I'm glad with all the new info and addresses, this is going to cost me... Saw that Ardbeg 10 and 17 are whisky's of the week at tonovermars and thus low-priced... So I have to buy a couple... And as far as Cadenhead... Wow! Any suggestions would be helpful though... (my preference is the more peaty whisky's, although Springbank is also very yummy...)

They have a nice selection upstairs, but plenty more downstairs. Not all the salespeople know whisky, but simply ask for one who does. You might also want to check out the selection on the website before actually going to the store, just so that you will have an idea of what is not upstairs on the shelf by the window.

If you find this in a shop nearby, I have only one suggestion - buy it! One of the best bottlings of Laphroaig, I have ever tasted. Tasted it at Cadenhead's Campbeltown shop, but unfortunately they didn't hav a bottle for sale:-( But it is now ordered at a local shop, and I expect it within 14 days :-))

Beware though that the Cadenhead 2002 bottling of Ledaig is not the same as the distillery bottled Ledaig malt. In fact it's the normal Tobermory malt which means very low peat level.

Here are the taste notes from Cadenhead

Ledaig Island Age 10 Year 1992 Alcohol % 58.20 Nose Seaweed, damp oak, yet it has a heavyness about it. Cardamon, lemongrass, vanilla and more. Palate None of the expected seaweed or salt. An all round fine example of an _unpeated_ Island malt which lingers around the palate like a clean dry wine.
