Bourbon, a little off topic!

Guys

I noticed that their is no Bourbon news group so please do not get upset that this is a bit off-topic.

I received Jim Murray's Whiskey Bible for Christmas and I found that I agree with his reviews for the most part. I then started looking past the Scotch and Irish and into the Bourbon section. I found that he rated Elijah Craig

12 YO very highly and I found it online for $14 so I gave it a try.

I got to tell you it's awesome, if you haven't tried it, or Bourbon for that matter, it might be worth a purchase if you can find it. Here is where I got it:

My experiences with Bourbon in the past was that they were a bit sweet for me but this stuff is right on.

If you guys would not like posts like this in the future please let me know and I'll stop.

BTW, I also picked up a bottle of Springbank 10 YO but have yet to crack it.

Tim, while there is no Bourbon NG, it's often discussed here. You might find more info at

I also have an Elija Craig, the 18 year old. I bring it out when I have friends over for whisky (and whiskey) tastings. My Bourbon of choice, for over 50 years, however, has been Old Forester.

Not to worry, this group has discussed bourbons, Canadian and/or rye whiskies, Irish, Japanese and others from time to time. The primary focus remains scotch -- single malts, for the most part -- but in the five years or so that I've lurked and posted here, there have been no serious complaints about posts such as yours.

My expertise about bourbon is almost nonexistent; I don't see that much of it where I live but I like most of the several I've tried, including Elijah Craig.

A few people who have posted here from time to time are quite knowledgeable about bourbon, and perhaps one of them will wander by soon.

Elijah Craig was Whisky Mags Bourbon of Year for 2 years in a row. It is a great whiskey and that does not even reflect the low price. For about $10 more try Knob Creek, another excellent whiskey. Wild Turkey 101 is also very good with a little water. The list is long for good bourbons as it is for scotch.

lol. I'm drinking Elijah Craig 12 YO right now. And surprise - it's my favorite whisky along with Highland Park 12 scotch. Yeah, Elijah Craig is what I call Heaven on Earth. I also have Jim Murray's Whiskey Bible. It's a fun book to flip thru. He gives Elijah Craig a 96 out of 100 if I remember correctly. For good bourbon discussion check out straitbourbon.com -

I think it's the premier discussion board for bourbon.

I have bottle of Elijah Craig 18. I jumped for joy when I saw it in at a local store. After drinking a bottle, I would put it below the EC 12yo. It's ok, but way below the 12. That EC 12 is a real gem, particularly at under $20.00 I only pay around $14-15.00 around here.

Two years in a row? Wow! I didn't know that. What years did it win those awards?

I'll have to dig into my old copies, but off the top of my head it was

2001 and 2002.

A bit of discussion of Bourbon isn't really off-topic, as the topic is whisk[e]y. However Lew Bryson nor Ryan Stotz seem to reading this froup recently so the discussion of Bourbon has waned. :(

It's hard to make a mistake with the pinnacle of the Heaven Hill brands.

I've got a few other Bourbons that you might like to try.

Buffalo Trace (slightly musty taste) limited but growing availability. Rumors abound regarding single barrel version, alas it's not been seen here. This is one of my favorites at only ~US$15.

Booker's (pricey, and usually about 120+ proof, you'll want to add a bit of branch water to this one).

Knob Creek (fairly pricey, but worth it (IMNSHO)), big and spicy flavo[u]r.

Four Roses Single Barrel (fairly new to the market and not as sweet as the generic Four Roses).

Henry McKenna Special Reserve (very spicy), my personal favorite, but a bit on the sweet side. Extras: comes in a ceramic jug, but there is a downside to that type of packaging, as it's very difficult to know when to buy more. :)

Unless you like drinking Listerine(tm) stay far away from Blanton's, it's rather vile in addition to being an over-priced astringent.

I don't think that will be a problem as Bourbon discussions come up here fairly often.

Open it real soon. I've not yet had a Springbank that I didn't like. The Springbank CV is truly excellent.

P.S. Bill, it's "Bourbon" as opposed to "bourbon".
